Celebrating 5 Years of Innovation at Ogibiotec: A Journey of Growth and Impact
This month, on 12th Feb, Ogibiotec proudly celebrates its 5th anniversary — a milestone that marks half a decade of innovation, growth, and relentless pursuit of excellence in the biotechnology sector. What started as an ambitious idea has grown into a small and even more ambitious company supplying researchers, universities, and biotech companies around the globe.
We thought we’d take a moment to reflect on this incredible journey and share some of our proudest achievements, key milestones, and exciting plans for the future.
The Spark That Started It All
Founded in 2020 by a passionate team of physicists, engineers and biologists, Ogibiotec was born from a desire to solve a pressing problem in life science research: the inefficiencies, inconsistencies and inflexibilities of manual cell culturing at an early stage. From day one, our mission was clear — to harness the power of automation to revolutionise microbial culturing and give our users the time to focus on the innovation that matters.
Five years later, that mission remains at the core of everything we do, but our impact and capabilities have grown beyond what we could have imagined.
Key Milestones Along the Way

🏆 2020: Industry Recognition
We were thrilled to receive multiple awards for innovation, including recognition from Scottish Edge as the inaugural winners of the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre Award for Best Biotechnology Start-up in Scotland 2020.
🚀 2021: First Product Launch
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, just over a year after our founding, we launched the OGI BioReactor, our first microbial cell culture system. This innovation provided a platform for automated growth curves, reducing manual errors and improving data reproducibility for scientists.
🌍 2022: Global Expansion Begins
Ogibiotec began expanding beyond the UK. Our technology found a home in labs across Europe and North America, helping researchers to get the most out of their culturing processes.
🔬 2023: Breakthrough Collaborations
Ogibiotec partnered with leading universities and biotech companies on groundbreaking projects, including advancements in personalized medicine and regenerative therapies. These collaborations have paved the way for even more innovation.
🚀 2024: Introducing the OGI3
Last year, we launched our most advanced culturing system to date featuring batch, fed-batch and continuous culturing capabilities alongside, temperature, OD, pH and DO measurement. Since launching, we’ve supplied our units across Europe, North America and Australia to researchers working on problems as diverse as Food Equity and world hunger, Carbon capture and the climate crisis, Clean water and sanitation, clean energy and sustainable manufacturing.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Ogibiotec?
While we’re proud of how far we’ve come, we know this is just the beginning. The next five years promise even more exciting developments:
- Expanding Our Product Portfolio: We’re working on new automation solutions to further enhance research capabilities for our clients.
- Remote measurement and control: Removing the need for lengthy laboratory baby-sitting of cultures remains a key focus as we develop smarter, more adaptable systems for biobased research.
- Growing our Impact: We want to see our systems making a difference to our customers work which is why collaboration remains at the heart of our strategy. We’re excited to build new relationships with academic institutions, biotech firms, and pharmaceutical companies worldwide to ensure our tools meet their needs and increase the impact that we can have together.
