Meet Our Team

Alex McVey

CEO

Before founding ogibiotec, Alex gained extensive experience in biotechnology, focusing on product development and improving laboratory efficiency. He started OGI Bio in 2020 so that other scientists could also get their precious time back.

Discovery Time:

At work, Alex is passionate about creating value—whether it’s expanding the range of measurements in OGI's products, helping scientists make the most of their time, or fostering a company ethos focused on innovation and collaboration.

Outside of the office, he spends his time with his young family and exercising his tireless Border Collie in the hills around Edinburgh.



Bartek Waclaw

CTO

Bartek Waclaw is a biological physicist specialising in microbes, with a strong parallel passion for building scientific instruments. Before joining Ogibiotec in 2025, he led research groups at the University of Edinburgh and IPC in Warsaw, where he combined experimental and computational approaches to study bacterial growth and evolution. He has extensive experience in computer modelling and data analysis.

Discovery Time:

Bartek has long been interested in electronics and computer programming, having started by developing computer games, including a flight simulator. More recently, he created simulations of brain cancer treatment, and a viral epidemic aimed at educating the public about these diseases.

David Maddison

Operations Director

David has over 30 years experience in Operations and is a versatile leader with a proven record of delivering transformational change and performance improvement across multiple organisations, ranging from single sites to multi site Global operations. He also has a strong background and practical experience in the fields of Business Psychology and Lean.

Discovery Time:

In his spare time David can be found exploring the mountains or running with his two Border Collies.

Elaine Ferguson

CFO

An entrepreneurial leader, with extensive experience in start up to scale up growth. After training as a CA with EY Elaine has specialised in growing deep tech businesses, with successes including exiting Biopta with a sale to ReproCell in 2015 and growing ENOUGH, a Strathclyde University spin out, to a team of 70 people. Her experiences include raising in excess of £100M in equity funding, leading operational set up in multiple geographies and establishing international partnerships.

Discovery Time:

In her spare time Elaine is passionate about her role as Chair of Glasgow Disabled Scouts and can also be found enjoying the creative arts through singing and painting.

Gareth Bolitho

Head of Sales and Business Development

Teuta Pilizota

Co-founder

Teuta has more than 20 years of experience working and leading world-class biological physics laboratories, including developing the technology that ogibiotec’s products are based upon. She shares a passion with the entire team for achieving high efficiency in experimental lab work through automation.

Discovery Time:

Outside of ogibiotec, Teuta continues her research as a Professor of Biophysics at the University of Edinburgh, where ogibiotec’s core technology was first developed, and at the University of Cambridge.
